Turkey believes Saudi journalist was killed in consulate
08 October, 2018, 11:25
As mystery over his disappearance continues, friends of Jamal Khashoggi and Turkish security sources say he was likely killed in the Saudi consulate he entered last Tuesday, and his body was secretly taken from there.
A Turkish official told the AP late Saturday that an "initial assessment" by police concluded Khashoggi had been killed at the consulate.
"Disappearance and alleged murder of Jamal Khashoggi requires immediate and independent worldwide investigation", David Kaye tweeted on Sunday.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that he was personally following the case and that the investigators were looking at all the camera records and monitoring airports.
"God willing, we will not be faced with a situation we do not want".
"All the footage of entrance or exit of the embassy is under investigation".
"The official strongly denounced these baseless allegations, and expressed his doubt that they came from Turkish officials that are informed of the investigation or are authorized to comment on the issue", the statement read.
Hatice Cengiz took to Twitter to say that she "did not believe he has been killed" and was waiting for official confirmation.
Khashoggi, a Washington Postcontributor, had gone there on an administrative errand but "did not come back out" of the building, police had told the state-run Anadolu news agency.
There has been a Twitter uproar on social media by political activists and opinion writers talking about they called the "exposed play", and the odd Muslim Brotherhood supporters who tweeted that Khashoggi died two days ago, which was seen by many to expose the systematic and deliberate game.
Before his disappearance, Khoshaggi had been living since previous year in the U.S.in a self-imposed exile, after he fled the kingdom amid a crackdown on intellectuals and activists who criticized policies of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. "The Arab world had waited for this moment of freedom for a thousand years", Khashoggi told a Turkey-based Syrian opposition television station, just days before he disappeared.
Khashoggi, an outspoken critic of the Saudi government, had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States since 2017, when Saudi authorities launched a massive crackdown on the dissent.
An official of Turkey's ruling AK Party told broadcaster CNN Turk there was concrete evidence in the case, although none has yet been presented. He also said he is hopeful for a positive outcome to the matter. Speaking to Bloomberg on Friday, the Crown Prince said that the journalist left the consulate and Turkish authorities could search the building.
"But at the same time, the brash and abrasive young innovator has not encouraged or permitted any popular debate in Saudi Arabia about the nature of his many changes".
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on Twitter that if reports of his death were confirmed, "this would constitute a horrific, utterly deplorable, and absolutely unacceptable assault on press freedom".
"If the reports of Jamal's murder are true, it is a monstrous and unfathomable act", the Post's editorial page editor Fred Hiatt said in a statement.
So what do we know about the journalist? "He writes out of a sense of love for his country and deep faith in human dignity and freedom", Hiatt said in a statement on the USA newspaper's website.
