Israelis killed in West Bank shooting

Israeli security forces at the scene of a fatal shooting attack in Barkan Industrial Park in the northern West Bank Manhunt underway after West Bank shooting

Israeli security forces are searching for a Palestinian suspected of killing two Israelis and wounding a third in the occupied West Bank on Sunday.

The military called the shooting a terrorist attack and said the assailant, a 23-year-old from a nearby Palestinian town, was an employee of the factory where the assault took place.

A third woman also shot in the attack was hospitalised in stable condition.

Naalwa used a homemade gun, known locally as a "Carlo", according to the army, in what security forces believe was a "lone-wolf attack", meaning he was not part of a militant organisation or acting on its behalf.

Army spokesman Jonathan Conricus called it a "terrorist attack" but added that other unspecified factors were involved.

The military launched an investigation of the attack to determine, among other things, how the gun was smuggled into the industrial park and whether the terrorist meant to take Levengrond Yehezkel hostage, having used zip-ties to bind her hands.

The industrial zone is located next to the Israeli settlement Barkan and near the settlement of Ariel in the north of the West Bank.

Surveillance camera footage broadcast on Israeli television showed a man armed with a rifle fleeing down stairs and running away from the factory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack and vowed deal with the "reprehensible murderer" to "the fullest extent of the law".

"We applaud this heroic operation and affirm that it comes as a natural response to the Israeli occupation's crimes at the expense of the Palestinian people", the terror group said in a statement, citing "settlers storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque", attempts of the "occupation authorities" to demolish the illegal Khan al-Ahmar outpost and "daily incursions into the West Bank" as justification for the attack.

Barkan industrial park is next to the settlement of Barkan and was established in the early 1980s.

A number of attacks have occurred at that location, the Gush Etzion Junction.

More than 50 Israelis and several foreign nationals have been killed since late 2015 in a series of stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks, predominantly by Palestinians or Israeli Arabs.
