Saudi Arabia's crown prince said on Wednesday the case of Jamal Khashoggi was "painful" and that "justice will prevail" following the killing of the Saudi journalist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Saudi officials insisted for weeks that he had left the building alive, but said on Saturday that he had been killed after a fight broke out inside the building.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he has been in talks with the Treasury Department, about the possibility of imposing sanctions.

Mr Erdogan yesterday dismissed Riyadh's attempts to blame the killing on rogue operatives.

The Iranian leader called on the Turkish government to continue to carry out an impartial investigation into the Saudi journalist's murder.

"And they should be in big trouble", he concluded.

He is an outspoken critic of Saudi Arabia who has dared to defy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto ruler.

In a speech to the European Parliament, Mr Tusk said he expected member states and institutions to avoid any "ambiguous game". Some consulate employees urgently return to Saudi Arabia for "preparatory work".

Two sources told Reuters on Thursday that Central Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel has heard the recording during her visit to Turkey this week. This will not be the last word on the matter, he promised, though he also acknowledged shared strategic interests with the Saudis.

But when questioned about whether he believes the Saudi account of events leading up to Khashoggi's death, Trump replied, "I want to see the facts first" - while reiterating Riyadh's importance as a USA ally in the Middle East.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "strongly said that he had nothing to do with this, this was at a lower level", US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, adding he had spoken on Monday to the prince and to his father King Salman.

Saudi Attorney General Saud al-Mojeb said that investigators came to that conclusion after evidence presented by Turkish officials as part of the two nations' probe into the killing.

Turkey's investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on October 2 has been at times delayed by Saudi officials, who have appeared reluctant to grant authorities permission to search places considered Saudi territory.

But Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan contradicted that account, calling Khashoggi's death a "savage" and "pre-meditated murder".

Saudi Arabia and Iran are engaged in what amounts to a proxy war in Yemen, where they are supporting opposing sides in a bloody civil war.
