The Washington Post also cited officials in Wednesday's report as saying Khashoggi's remains were dissolved in acid, yet another claim that contradicts the Saudi account, which has shifted over time.

"Jamal Khashoggi's abduction and murder is extremely troubling". The murder has drawn withering criticism of Riyadh from around the world.

Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, reportedly told the White House that Jamal Khashoggi was a risky Islamist in a phone call days after the journalist was murdered.

Khashoggi has been missing since October 2 when he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

The United States is urging Saudi Arabia to locate the body of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi and return it to his family as soon as possible.

The call from Mohammed bin Salman took place before Saudi Arabia acknowledged that the writer was murdered and urged Kushner, President's Trump's son-in-law and a White House adviser, and Bolton to maintain the alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia, the Washington Post reported.

The crown prince stated Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, prior to Saudi Arabia formally acknowledging it was responsible for the journalist's death.

Khashoggi, who lived in the United States and wrote columns for the Washington Post, went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to collect some documents, but he never reappeared.

According to The Washington Post, Netanyahu has specifically told the White House that the crown prince is a key strategic partner and a linchpin of the US-Israeli front against Iran's regional influence.

"According to the latest information we have, the reason they cut up the body is it was easier to dissolve it", said Aktay, an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who was close to Khashoggi. Imagine what would happen if Saudi Arabia were destabilized.

Khashoggi's family rejected the characterization in a statement to the newspaper. "To claim otherwise would be ridiculous", the statement said.

He entered the consulate to sort out documents for his marriage to his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

The US-Saudi relationship "is too big to fail", Prince Turki said.

Fidan, the Istanbul prosecutor, on Wednesday said that Khashoggi was strangled shortly after entering the consulate and that his body was dismembered afterward. "The president said we will demand accountability for those who were involved in the commission of this heinous crime".

After Saudi Arabia admitted that Khashoggi was killed in its Istanbul consulate, five high-ranking officials were dismissed, including bin Salman's media chief and the deputy head of the Saudi intelligence service.
