Jamal Khashoggi's sons have appealed to the Turkish and Saudi authorities to find and return their father's body for a family burial, as more details emerged about alleged Saudi attempts to cover up the truth about the dissident journalist's killing.

"All what we want right now is to bury him in Al Baqi [cemetery] in Madinah with the rest of his family", Salah said.

Saudi Arabia only allowed Turkish police to finally search the consulate on Oct 15.

The murder has placed huge strains on Saudi Arabia's relationship with the United States and other western countries and has tarnished the image of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto ruler.

Saudi Attorney General Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb met with Turkish authorities last week in Istanbul.

President Trump has rejected the possibility of cancelling billion-dollar arms deals with Saudi Arabia over the situation, but did warn of "very severe" consequences if the Saudi government is found to be responsible for Khashoggi's death.

The newspaper alleged that while the Saudi team's declared intent was to investigate the murder, it actually meant to cover-up the deed.

On Sunday, Khashoggi's sons said that they were disturbed by the depiction of their father after his death and that he had been misrepresented for political reasons.
