Republicans will retain control of the Senate, ABC News projects

In a midterm election that unfolded as a referendum on President Donald Trump, Democrats are performing strongly in early returns as they try to seize back the House, but Republicans look to keep hold of the Senate.

Aid to Israel- including emergency aid in times of conflict- goes through the House, and votes on such aid were the subject of debate in several races across the country.

News projected Democrats would hold a 229-206 House majority, taking over control from the Republicans for the first time in eight years. Gallup, on Election Day, reported that 81% of voters it described as either Democrats or "Democratic leaners" are "very or somewhat worried" about what will happen in the US if Republicans maintain their majority in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. But Congress could not remove him from office without a conviction by a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate.

With a House majority, Democrats will have the power to investigate Mr Trump's tax returns, possible business conflicts of interest and allegations involving his 2016 campaign's links to Russian Federation. Moscow denies meddling and Trump denies any collusion. "Thank you to all!" Our most fervent supporters hope that we will use our newly found control to investigate nearly everything that the Trump administration has done.

Early exit polls showed Trump was a major factor for almost two-thirds of voters who cast their ballots, while a CBS News poll found that 55 percent said they disapproved of the president's performance. After some moments of doubt, the voters of New Jersey seem to have chose to hold their collective noses and vote to keep the Senate seat blue rather than give it to GOP challenger Bob Hugin - and Mitch McConnell.

Tuesday's result was a bitter outcome for Trump, a 72-year-old former reality TV star who campaigned for fellow Republicans on increasingly hostile anti-immigrant rhetoric and was accused of inciting violence in recent weeks.

The expectation is that Democrats will bring a new level of oversight and investigation of the Trump administration, but numerous candidates ran on issues like healthcare and immigration.

In the last two decades there have only three election cycles where one party picked up 24 or more seats.

Trump's polarizing impact on the country has driven unusually high interest in the election, the first major political test of his presidency and one that will provide Democrats with clues to the strategy they'll need to challenge him in 2020.

All 435 House of Representative seats are in play.

But Republicans appeared bound to hold onto the Senate, and possibly even pick up a couple of seats.

At least 64 House races remain competitive, according to a Reuters analysis of the three top nonpartisan forecasters, and Senate control was expected to come down to a half dozen close contests in Arizona, Nevada, Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana and Florida. Rep. Anna Eshoo (Calif.), who's likely to take on a bigger role on the same committee, is among the top recipients of pharmaceutical industry campaign contributions in Congress. A blue wave for Democrats never really materialized because Republicans were able to energize their own voters through a campaign full of racial anxiety and culture war items.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas. Now, in a year that has been defined by the political awakening and activism of women, Election Day is testing whether those women will reach record-breaking numbers in Congress and in governor's mansions across the country.

Voters between the ages of 18 and 34 backed Democrats by 62 percent to 34 percent, up from 2014 when 54 percent backed Democrats and 36 percent supported Republicans. First, potential voters favor Democrats by 8-9pp in socalled generic ballot polls.

Going into Election Day, Democrats needed to gain 23 seats in order to take back the House, which would allow them to throw a wrench in Trump's agenda on contentious issues, among them immigration. If we do so, it will ensure Democratic control of the house will well endure beyond the next two years.

Voting in Chicago, James Gerlock, 27, a Republican, said he wanted to see more of the soaring economic growth that Trump says is the fruit of his business-friendly policies.

The door to a Democratic-controlled Senate slammed shut with little suspense. "Americans, by and large, like the idea of checks and balances under our constitution and our system, and with Republican House, Senate and White House, this is a feeling that this has gone out of whack". On the Democrat side, Texas Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke is saying he would push to impeach the president if elected.

At 7 p.m., most polls in New Hampshire and Vermont close, but the contests in those states are only mildly interesting.

In Virginia's 7th District, a Republican-leaning area near Richmond, Republican Rep. Dave Brat was in a tight race with Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer.
