Imelda Marcos to appeal Sandiganbayan verdict

Ex-Filipino First Lady Imelda Marcos faces years behind bars Imelda Marcos is sentenced to at least six years in prison

The Philippines' anti-corruption court ordered the arrest of former first lady Imelda Marcos on Friday after finding her guilty of seven counts of graft during the two-decade rule of her husband and late dictator, Ferdinand Marcos.

The special anti-graft Sandiganbayan court sentenced Marcos, 89, to serve 6 to 11 years in prison for each of the seven counts of violating an anti-corruption law when she illegally funneled about $200 million to Swiss foundations in the 1970s as Metropolitan Manila governor.

Alisuag told CNN that the court had ordered the arrest warrant but it had not been yet issued.

Ferdinand Marcos, who along with his cronies was accused of pilfering $10 billion from the Philippines, fled with his family to the United States after a people's uprising ended his 20-year rule in 1986.

Marcos said in a statement that the decision was being studied by one of her lawyers who notified the Marcos family that he intends to appeal the decision.

In the 21 years that President Ferdinand Marcos was in power, he and his wife became infamous for amassing billions of dollars, with funds funnelled into Swiss bank accounts.

Imelda Marcos returned to the Philippines in 1991, during the administration of Corazon Aquino, to face more than 100 criminal and civil cases on charges that she and her husband siphoned off $5 billion-to-$10 billion and committed human rights violations during the 20-year dictatorship. She was a no-show at her case's promulgation so she will be given 30 days to give a reason as to why.

Congressman Tom Villarin of the opposition Akbayan Party said Marcos "can't invoke her age nor humanitarian grounds for her not to serve the sentence".

Ilocos Norte 2nd District Representative Imelda Marcos will be appealing the guilty verdict handed down to her on November 9, 2018.

However, she can still appeal the conviction.

The court's decision came 27 years after the case was first filed.

Ferdinand Marcos was elected as the president of the Philippines in 1965, but declared martial law in 1972 heralding a dictatorial regime.

A spokesman for the Philippine president indicated on Friday that Duterte will not intervene with the court on Imelda Marcos' behalf.
